Two first waterway bus routes submitted in HCMC

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has submitted the city People’s Committee two first waterway bus routes, said department deputy director Le Hoang Minh.

The two waterway bus routes will be built under BOO (Build-Own-Operate) form during a certain period of time approved by the city authorities.

Investor Thuong Nhat Company will implement the project in districts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, Binh Thanh and Thu Duc along Saigon River, and Thanh Da, Ben Nghe and Tau Hu Canals.

The first route will start from Bach Dang Wharf in District 1 and travel along Saigon River to enter Thanh Da Canal and then move towards the final station in Binh Quoi River, Linh Dong Ward, Thu Duc.

The 10.8 kilometer route will comprise seven stations.

The second route will depart from Bach Dang Wharf, travel along Saigon River to enter Ben Nghe and Tau Hu Canal before arriving at Lo Gom Canal in Ward 7, District 6.

This 10.3 kilometer route will have seven stations also.

Mr. Minh said that the project feasibility was determined because the space matter for stations has been solved.

The Thuong Nhat Company will buy 10 motor boats which can accommodate 60 persons each from now until 2020 and equip larger-capacity vehicles in the following phase in case passengers’ demand increases.

If the project is approved this year, the company will start building all wharfs comprising terminals Linh Dong and Lo Gom and parts of the terminal in District 1.

The project is expected to complete and come into operation by 2016.

Total investment capital is estimated to reach VND128 billion (US$5.87 million), Mr. Minh said.
