The Legal Department under Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council has instructed the Traffic Police to deal firmly with vehicles out of registrations in a meeting on March 24, 2006.
There are about 6,800 expired vehicle registrations in Ho Chi Minh City
According to the Viet Nam Register, there are about 6,800 expired vehicle registrations in Ho Chi Minh City. However, only 700 owners out of those have registered to have their vehicles decommissioned so far.
Most of vehicles have changed hands many times without registering, so it is hard for the Traffic Police to track down the real owner.
At the meeting, the Traffic Police also petitioned the Legal Department to impose heavier fines on motorbike riders without safety helmet on regulated routes, illegal modifications of motorbikes by installing more headlights or horns.
