Upon checking a private resident in Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City yesterday, local officials found hundreds of wild animals which had been illegally captured for food in local hotels and restaurants.

Local officials conficate turtles found in the house

Forest rangers, police and market management officials searched the house and discovered dozens of bags containing 71 live turtles and hundreds of live teals.

Tran Thi Kim Nhanh, the house owner, could not provide any legal documents to prove the origin of the wild animals and she admitted to having bought them from dubious sources.

Local officials imposed a fine on Nhanh, confiscated the animals and brought them to the headquarters of the HCMC Forestry Management Department.

According to State regulations, specific forms of wildlife and its transfer, processing and trade must be officially approved. The possession of such animals is only allowed for the purpose of scientific research. Unlicensed restaurants, hotels and food stalls are not allowed to advertise or sell such wildlife.
