16-hour TV Extravaganza as China Marks Five Years in WTO

China marked the fifth anniversary of its entry into the World Trade Organization Monday with an unprecedented 16-hour-long television extravaganza.

The day-long live transmission was to culminate in the evening with a show featuring five-year-old children who were born the day when China became a member on December 11, 2001, state television said.

During the course of the program, TV showed footage of consumers and shop assistants in Western countries happily extolling the virtues of fireworks and other products made in China.

Officials praising China's record over the five years of WTO membership included WTO Director General Pascal Lamy and Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai.
