Ukraine names 'chocolate king' foreign minister

KIEV, Oct 9, 2009 (AFP) - The Ukrainian parliament on Friday named Petro Porochenko as foreign minister, one of the country's richest men, known as the "king of chocolate" thanks to his confectionery factories.

Pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko nominated Porochenko, 44, whose candidacy was voted in by 240 MPs, more than the 226 required, the Interfax news agency reported.

Porochencko has no diplomatic experience and previously supervised the Ukrainian central bank.

The father-of-four is also involved in the auto industry and owns Kanal 5 television station which played a key role in Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution which brought Yushchenko to power.
