Electric motorbike owners must register & pay fee

From July 1, 2015, electric motorbike owners must register and pay fee for the vehicles as per a latest decree of the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry of Finance has sent its document to related ministries, departments, agencies and local authorities upon registration of electric motorbike

The Ministry said that electric motorbike importers just pay preferential import tax of 60 percent and VAT of 10 percent as per the law or customs department.

According to the Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, most of electric motorbikes currently used are smuggled from China without declaration to the Customs Department and pay tax; accordingly, vehicle owners can not show necessary documents of origin, receipts and registration fee to have number plates issued by police. Hence, it is impossible to collect tax from owners.

Consequently, the Police Department proposed the Ministry of Finance to exempt import tax and VAT and receipt of these vehicles people already bought until December 31. According to Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, vehicle owner are exempted from registration fee if they register at police station before June 30.
