Former official charged with ‘abuse of democratic freedoms’

Nguyen Phi Duy Linh (L) at his trial at the Da Nang People’s Court last year for “inciting citizens to lodge false complaints against state agencies.” Tran Van Thanh, a former chief inspector in the Ministry of Public Security, has now been charged in the same case.

The Da Nang police have filed charges against a former Ministry of Public Security chief inspector after expanding their investigation into a case in which a man and his accomplices were charged with “inciting citizens to lodge false complaints against state agencies.”

Tran Van Thanh, a former major general, has been prosecuted for “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the state, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens."

In September last year the Da Nang People’s Court suspended the trial of Nguyen Phi Duy Linh and his accomplices after new evidence came to light showing Mr. Thanh’s complicity.

Mr. Thanh has been prosecuted under Article 258 of the Criminal Code following approval from the city Procuracy – the prosecutor’s office -- four days ago, the police said.

He is now in hospital with hypertension, they added.
