Over 13kg rhino horns found smuggled into HCMC airport

A man was caught at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC on March 12 smuggling over 13 kilograms of African rhinoceros horns.

The Department of Customs discovered five horns and some pieces of rhino horns in the luggage of a man by the alias of V.C.L.

The batch is estimated to be worth VND15 billion (US$750,000), said officers at the scene.

The items are banned from imports and sale because the species is classified as “critically endangered” under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and Decision No.11/2013/QD-TTg signed by the Prime Minister on Jan. 23, 2013.

The cause is under further investigation by the Department of Criminal Investigation in Economic Management and Positions.
