Police Break Illegal Big Betting Ring, Detain 19

Vietnamese police have arrested 19 people in an illegal football betting ring, described as a very big coup in Ho Chi Minh City.

Police officers of the Ministry of Public Security and Ho Chi Minh City raided 14 homes in the city on Sunday, founding many computers and documents the ring used for the betting business based on international football results with foreign gambling organizations. Police seized almost VND3 billion and over US$360,000.

The ring leader was Ma Van Kim Phong, 54, arrested at his home in Phu Nhuan District, also the ring’s headquarters.

Police also arrested his assistants Pham Ngoc Dung, Nguyen Thuc Hai, Quach Su Ky, Pham Ngoc Hung, Truong Van Hong, Tran Van Hai and others. A total of 19 were detained.

Among them, Ky was in charge of finalizing deals with gambling organizations overseas because he was the most knowlegeable of online deals.

A source said as for a night with many football matches in Europe, the ring could make deals for US$1 million more or less.

Police have kept a close watch on the crime ring for months and chose the weekkend for a raid. And police officers caught the illegal gamblers red-handed with lots of computer documents and cash, detained a Toyota car and over 10 expensive motorcycles.
