Police Break up Major Drug, Gun Smuggling Ring

50 people appeared Friday in Tuyen Quang Province People’s Court on charges of illegal weapons trading, drug smuggling and bribery.

Taking advantage of a careless supervisor, a storeman at a Ministry of Public Security armory managed to steal 65 K54 pistols, three K59 pistols and 82 K54 bullets from 2002 to 2004.

Nguyen Manh Duc was arrested while trying to send the stolen weapons to his accomplices to smuggle into China.

A raid on the accomplices also netted 836.8 kilograms of opium and nine cakes of heroin bound for China.

The drugs had been taken from Dien Bien and Son La provinces near Laos to the northern border province of Ha Giang.

Among the 100 suspects in the case are government officials, police officers and border guards in Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Son La, Vinh Phuc and Ha Noi.
