The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court announced the death penalty on a leader of a gang of robbers who used machetes to attack people and rob them of their property or vehicle.

The City Court on December 24 and 25passed the death sentence on 20-year-old Ho Duy Truc from Tan Phu District in Ho Chi Minh City, while his accomplices were given jail terms from nine months to life imprisonment.

From June to November 2012, this gang of robbers attacked many people in Districts 2, 8, 12, Tan Binh, Binh Tan, Nha  Be and Binh Chanh using machetes to rob 15 motor vehicles and other belongings worth more than VND600 million (US$28,500).

Truc and his accomplices’ last treacherous and ruthless assault rocked the public. They used a machete to slash at Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy's right wrist while she was driving over the Phu My Bridge in District 2 and tried to rob her of her SH motorbike.
