Sugar factory fined VND3 billion for polluting lagoon

A sugar factory in the central province of Khanh Hoa was fined VND3 billion ($132,112) for polluting a local lagoon where residents raised aquatic animals.

People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa Province yesterday decided to issue the fine to Sugar Company for polluting the lagoon. In addition to the fine, the polluter had to remedy the environment and report to the administration within 30 days.

As Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper released on March 13, breeders in Thuy Trieu Lagoon in Cam Lam District discovered aquatic animal in the lagoon died en mass. 

Seriously, local breeders who take water from the lagoon for raising different aquatic animals in nearby canals also suffered huge loss.

Informed the incident, related agencies carried out probe detecting the polluter.

Thuy Trieu lagoon is considered as golden lagoon as it brings wealth for households in Cam Lam District and Cam Ranh Town. So far, after the incident, 39 households demanded compensation of VND9 billion yet none has received financial aid yet.
