Vietnamese woman gets death for drug trafficking

A Ho Chi Minh City Court on October 3 sentenced a 45-year-old Vietnamese woman to death for smuggling more than 4.1 kg of synthetic drugs into Vietnam in July 2012.

Nguyen Thi Hoang Lan, 45, from the southern province of Binh Phuoc and Nguyen Thi Ly, 41, from Binh Tan District in Ho Chi Minh City, were charged with illegally transporting drugs.

While Nguyen Thi Hoang Lan received the death sentence, her accomplice was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Lan and Ly were hired by Tran Thi Kim Chi, 45, from Binh Phuoc Province, to work for a transnational drug trafficking ring.

When Ly arrived in Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC on July 20, 2012, customs officers discovered many bags full of a white powder hidden inside her luggage.  Tests of the powder confirmed it to be methamphetamine, a synthetic drug.

Basing on  Ly’s testimony, police arrested Lan when she received the drug from Ly.
