Alarming shortage of medical workers in the Mekong Delta was under discussion at a meeting in Can Tho Medicine University on August 14.
The meeting participants also complained that medicine universities asked for more enrolment quota; however, after graduation, a few students returned their localities to work.
Local authority leaders in the Mekong Delta and South East region highly assessed the training program according to real demand held by the Southwestern region Steering Committee and Can Tho Medicine University.
In 2014, 172 medicine students returned to work in districts in the Mekong Delta after graduation. Tra Vinh Province received 29 students, Bac Lieu Province admitted 22 and An Giang and Ca Mau had two for each.
According to the demand, the Medicine University has to training 839 students for the health sector; however, to ensure training quality, the school only satisfied 20 – 30 percent of demand.
