Strong tremors were felt at 7.15am, sending residents fleeing from their houses. Thousands of households living in the Thu Bon River valley worried that the earthquake would damage the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.
Dang Phong, chairman of the People’s Committee in Bac Tra My District, said that the earthquake on Thursday morning was of 4.2 magnitude-same as the one on September 3.
The district People’s Committee has asked provincial authorities to calm and pacify the people, and help them cope with the situation.
Meantime, the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention in the province has also asked district authorities to disseminate knowledge and guide residents to cope with earthquakes, which might continue to reoccur.
Two other quakes were also recorded in Bac Tra My District at dawn on September 5, but their intensity was lower than this earthquake.
Dinh Van Thu, deputy chairman of the People’s Committee in Quang Nam Province, has sent a report to the Prime Minister asking him to instruct relevant ministries and departments to do a survey and study the pattern of earthquakes in Bac Tra My District. They should also examine the safety of the dam at the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant.
The provincial People’s Committee also proposed to the Ministry of Science and Technology to speed up the project to install an earthquake observation system in Bac Tra My District.
