The Vietnam General Department of Seas and Islands is drafting a list of sea-exploitation standards to which it will hold local authorities to ensure the sustainable development of Vietnamese waters.
Areas in which the effective exploitation of local waters has ensured the social welfare of local communities, protected the environment and utilized ecologically sound methods that protect natural resources, will be certified with “geographical zone trademarks”, said department deputy head Nguyen Dang Dao
Mr. Dao said the certificates and accompanying “green cards” would help local communities boost the prestige of their products.
The green cards will be issued for fixed period of time, subject to renewal, and will be revoked in areas where violations of the prescribed criteria are found.
After an evaluation period, the criteria for Vietnam’s geographical zone trademarks will be registered with international organizations in hopes of global recognition.
