Belgian Minister of Justice Laurette Onkelinx has refused a U.S. request to extradite a Vietnamese food import-export business executive to Florida for trial.
Nguyen Buu Huy, deputy director of the An Giang Agriculture and Food Import/Export Company (Afiex), was detained on May 10 while participating in an annual international aquatic product fair in the Belgian capital, Brussels.
The Office of Florida’s Attorney General claims that Afiex broke US law by selling catfish (tra and basa) under other names in order to evade tax.
As a result of the Belgian refusal, Mr. Buu Huy may be released today, having spent four months in custody.
The Vietnamese embassy in Belgium says he was treated well during his incarceration and is in good health.
