Buddhist monks and nuns have donated VND 87 billion (US$ 5.3 million) and 15 tons kilograms of rice to charity this year, delegates heard at a meeting of the Buddhist Church of Viet Nam held yesterday in Ho Chi Minh City.
They also extended a helping hand to victims of natural disasters in China and Myanmar, donating US$35,000 and 100 tons of rice.
The Buddhist Church reported there are around 44,498 monks and nuns in 14,775 pagodas and temples around the country.
The UN Day of Vesak -- marking the Buddha’s birthday and enlightenment -- was well organized by the Buddhist Church in Ha Noi this year, while its members participated in seminars and meetings held in foreign countries, delegates heard.
The meeting was held to review the Church’s activities so far this year.
