The 9th National Congress of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union opened this morning at the National Convention Center in Ha Noi with the participation of 1,034 outstanding delegates from across the country.

The four-day congress, from December 18 to 21, is to focus on 14 themes including raising a generation of Vietnamese youth with traditional patriotism, revolutionary ideals, high cultural values, morals, national development leadership, administrative reform and international integration.
The delegates are to discuss the union’s six main programs and projects to 2012. They include the union’s efforts to ensure traffic safety, youth employment, helping young inventors and the establishment of a thousand information-technology schools and Internet shops in rural and highland areas.
The congress is to be attended by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, 300 Party representatives, various government officials, heroic mothers, and revolutionary veterans.
It will be covered by about 200 correspondents, including those from Reuters, AFP, Akata, NHK, Kyodo, AP and other domestic and foreign news agencies.
The show’s opening ceremony was broadcast live on VTV1 at 8:30 am, today, December 18.
