The event was organised jointly by the People's Committee of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee.

At the meeting, leaders from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province emphasised the important role of seas and oceans in the development of socio-economy and national defence.

Over-exploitation of natural resources and environmental pollution has damaged sea biological diversity and ecological systems.

The 4th ‘Vietnam Sea and Island Week 2012’ to take place from June 1-8 will call on people to join hands to mark this year’s theme, “Vietnam will be stronger and more prosperous from the sea”.

The event not only honours the functions, role and special importance of seas and oceans, but also raises people’s responsibilities to the national seas.

‘Vietnam Sea and Island Week 2012’ will also include sea brand name and sea economy forums among other various activities.
