Disease infests rice crop

Ten thousand hectares of the winter-spring rice crop in the northern central region has become infested with disease.

The dense fog occurring every morning has created conducive conditions for insects to thrive and flourish and destroy large areas of rice fields.

These areas have already been re-cultivated after they were devastated by floods and the severe cold weather in provinces from Thua Thien-Hue to Nghe An since late last year.

Ho Van Dang, director of the Thua Thien-Hue Province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the black streaked dwarf rice disease has enveloped wide areas which will badly affect the next harvest.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Duc Cuong, chairman of Quang Tri Province People’s Committee has decided to use the provincial budget to assist farmers whose crops have been badly damaged by disease.

A total of  over VND2.1 billion (US$100,000) will be distributed to farmers in the districts of Vinh Linh, Gio Linh, Cam Lo and Trieu Phong, as well as in Quang Tri town and Dong Ha city.
