Chairman of the Central Committee of Vietnam Fatherland Front Nguyen Thien Nhan led the inspection delegation yesterday paid a working with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development about carrying out policies and solutions of natural disaster and climate change response.

At the working, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said that the urgent climate change has influenced seriously to resident’s life as well as production; however, the ministries, departments and relevant agencies have not conducted timely policies, measures and solutions.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat reported that drought and saltwater influx caused damage of VND 5, 572 billion. Currently, the Central Highlands region has suffered serious water shortage in local streams, rivers, wells and water reservoirs while the Mekong Delta region has been influenced extremely by saltwater influx, causing the loss of nearly one million tons of rice.
In the Central Highlands region, around 175, 000 hectares of coffee and peper trees withered due to long- lasting water shortage. The drought and saltwater influx are predicted to hit nationwide in the next months.
In order to response to climate change, the localities need to effectively save and use water source in life and cultivation, convert saline and brackish water into sweet water in cultivation, suggested Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan.
Moreover, the chairman also called for Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to edit documentation conducting solutions for climate change response.
