The People’s Committee of Tay Tra District in the central province of Quang Ngai on Friday worked with the HP Joint Stock Company, investor of Song Rieng Hydropower Plant, to tackle the erosion that has occurred along a dyke route of the plant.
Nguyen Phi Vu, director of HP Company, said that erosion has occurred along a nearly 500 metre stretch of the dyke that was built one week back to protect the plant from flooding.
The dyke stretch has eroded due to heavy vehicular traffic on the plant’s construction site and heavy rainfall over the last few days.
Tran Thanh Ngoc, deputy chairman of Tay Tra District, said that besides erosion, water leaks have been reported by local residents along the dyke, which is basically built of mud and soil.
If the dyke breaches, 25 households may be in danger of inundation. As a result, the district People’s Committee has proposed to the company to fortify the dyke with concrete so as to prevent further erosion in the flooding season.
The 3.75MW Song Rieng Hydropower Plant has investments of VND70 billion (US$3.3 million). It was expected to be operational by the end of last year, but its construction is running far behind schedule.
