The Farmers’ Association in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has been found to have illegally sold 40 hectares of public land, which rightfully belonged to the State and should have been returned to the same.
According to the Inspection Committee of Kien Giang Province, the provincial People’s Committee had earlier handed over the piece of land to the Farmers’ Association to conduct agricultural research.
The association didn’t make proper use of the land and instead of handing it back to the state authorities, they sold it to a business concern for VND2.5 billion (US$119,000).
After receiving the money, the association did not register the land in the record books as it did not want any of it traced back to them, hence individuals in the association made illicit payments to individuals and concerned organizations to keep the deal under wraps and pocket the profits.
However, soon as they were caught out, the association quickly handed over the money to the state authorities.
The Inspection Committee also found many violations by the association in their income and expense account management, to the tune of over VND600 million ($29,000).
Nguyen Thanh Long and Quang Trong Bich, Chairman and Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Farmers’ Association, have been asked to take responsibility for the accounts violations.
Besides, the financial department, the accountant, treasurer and other related individuals at the association will also be held accountable.
