During the last few weeks, fishermen along the central coastal provinces of Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai are in good spirits, as they bring in bumper hauls of Acetes shrimps, anchovies and herrings.
According to Nguyen Van Cua, a fisherman from An Hoa Commune in Phu Yen Province, each boat caught an average of 200-400 kilograms of Acetes shrimps from early morning till noon, and sold to traders at VND10,000 per kilogram, raking a profit of VND18-40 million, after expenses.
While in Ninh Thuan Province, each boat brought in an average of 1-2 tonnes of anchovies, with some even netting more than 4 tonnes, earning VND10-30 million.
Anchovies are priced according to their size. However, most anchovies caught in the central coastal provinces are processed for making fish sauce, and for export. This makes for lucrative business for anchovy processors and provides employment for local people.
