Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem arrived in San Francisco, California, on Saturday to begin a nine-day visit to the United States.

Since arriving, Mr. Khiem has met with several university deans, the mayor of Berkeley, the managing director of the Bay Area World Trade Center, and the CEO of the United Commercial Bank.

He has also addressed a gathering of 250 Vietnamese living in California and praised the strong growth of Vietnamese communities in the US, and said he appreciated their warm welcome.

Mr. Khiem spoke highly of Viet Nam’s progress and achievements in 2006 and talked about his government’s policies on overseas Vietnamese people.

He said Viet Nam viewed expatriate Vietnamese people as important to the country, so matters relating to their rights in Viet Nam including visas, buying houses and the country’s foreign investment policies were being actively addressed.
