Foreign ship hits Vietnamese fishing boat, no casualties

Fifteen crew members of a Vietnamese fishing boat were rescued after their boat was struck by a foreign ship, about 300km east of the central province of Binh Thuan early yesterday morning (Jan 8).

The STAR 27-01 ship of the Truong Sa rescue centre of the Vietnam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) managed to bring the fishermen safely to Nha Trang port in Khanh Hoa Province by 8pm last night.

The Vietnamese fishing boatwhich anchored near Phu Quy Island for repair works was hit by a foreign ship later identified as Liberia’s Main Trader vessel, en route from China to Singapore.

Though all the 15 crew members on the fishing boat were rescued, their boat along with all its equipment worth about VND 2.5 billion was submerged at sea.

MRCC coordinated with Main Trader which then brought all the fishermen on board the STAR 27-01 ship, and later to the Military commander in Binh Thuan Province.

The foreign ship which struck the vessel will have to pay for damages, according to MRCC.
