Four people have been reported killed in the northern mountainous provinces of Yen Bai and Son La, after torrential rainfall for the last two days caused landslides and toppled trees across several parts of the region.

On Tuesday, heavy rains triggered a landslide in which one man was buried in Lao Chai Commune of Mu Cang Chai District in Yen Bai Province. Earlier, another resident had been struck dead by lightning in the province.

Water levels in springs also surged to inundate Highway 32 in Cat Thinh Commune of Van Chan District, causing traffic congestion in the area.

In Son La Province, farm production and daily lives of residents has been greatly affected by persistent heavy rainfall. Big trees toppled over, killing two persons in Tan Xuan Commune of Moc Chau District.

On Monday morning, heavy rainfall triggered a huge landslide and flash floods from Nam Pan Spring in It Ong Town and Hua Trai Commune, sweeping away five houses and one warehouse.

According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center, a low pressure zone occurred in the Gulf of Tonkin on Tuesday afternoon.

This low pressure zone will bring more heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the northern region, also affecting the southern and central regions of Vietnam.
