Gov’t calls for social contribution in building traffic infrastructure

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urged the Ministry of Transport to focus on public-private parnership (PPP)in building traffic infrastructure at a meeting to review program of building and upgrading the National Highway 1A and Ho Chi Minh Road on January 4.

A representative from the ministry reported that it invested VND202,556 billion in building and upgrading traffic infrastructure system of the country during 5 past years and VND186,660 billion (US$8.3 billion) of total spending was carried out under PPP .

46 percent (US$5,1 million) of the total expenditure of the project on expanding the National Highway No.1 and Ho Chi Minh City Road was invested by private investors.  Thanks to the sector’s effort, the project finished 1.5 years earlier than the schedule.

Additionally, the project to upgrade the National Highway from the northern province of Thanh Hoa to the Mekong delta city of Can Tho was also completed one year earlier than its plan.

Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed that in the next few years the state budget is still limited; accordingly, the Ministry needs to increase calling for social contribution on building traffic infrastructure.

Over the aviation, the Prime Minister urged the ministry to resolve difficulties along the way to pave for the modernization of the runway, station of Tan Son Nhat Airport and other airports across the country to meeting demand and increase the sector’s growth.

Upon development of harbor, the Prime Minister ordered the Ministry to building and upgrading major harbor such as Lach Huyen Harbor in the Northern province of Hai Phong and other harbors in the central provinces.

On building roads, the Ministry needs to mobilize money to finish nearly 2,000km of high way in next 5 years. Over railway, Prime Minister wanted to reduce railway traffic accidents ordered to decrease  to 5,000 dead people because of railway accidents per year in 5 next years.

At the meeting, Minister Dinh La Thang promised to adjust policies and mechanism to encourage more investors to pour money in the sectors. Moreover, the sector will report the first phase of Long Thanh Airport to the government, the National Assembly and the Party.
