An estimated number of around 140,000 overseas Vietnamese come home for the lunar New Year holidays, or Tet in Viet Nam, according to the Overseas Vietnamese Committee in Ho Chi Minh City.

Chairman of the committee Nguyen Chon Trung said the number increased by 40% from last year, adding that the committee is planning to work closely with customs officers and volunteers at the Ho Chi Minh City-based international Tan Son Nhat airport and other concerned agencies to welcome overseas Vietnamese on their arrivals.

Besides, from December 29-21, the city’s Association of Overseas Vietnamese Enterprises is planning to organize various activities for overseas Vietnamese such as green tours, spring fair to welcome the year 2007, tennis open tournament, and New Year Eve’s party.

Exhibitions and trade promotion forums will also be held by the city’s Investment and Trade Promotion Center during the occasion as part of a Tet-welcoming program for overseas Vietnamese.

Remarkably, the Overseas Vietnamese Committee in Ho Chi Minh City will organize a forum entitled "The role of Overseas Vietnamese intellectuals and entrepreneurs in Viet Nam’s World Trade Organization entry."

According to statistics recorded by the committee, by the end of this November, over 380 overseas Vietnamese enterprises in the Ho Chi Minh City have been licensed with a total investment capital of over VND 3.2 trillion.
