Help amnestied persons, PM tells local authorities

Following the annual Tet amnesty for prisoners announced by the President, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged local governments to help the pardoned convicts re-integrate into society.

In a recent message, he told chairpersons of provincial and city people’s committees to assist them in returning to a normal life, finding jobs, overcoming their stigma, and building a new life.

They should consider providing loans to those in need, he said.

But he also said local authorities should keep an eye on the released prisoners to prevent them from relapsing into crime, adding recidivists must betrictly punished.

On the same day Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, chairman of the Central Amnesty Consulting Council, visited Phu Son 4 prison in Thai Nguyen Province and Vinh Quang prison in Vinh Phuc Province to oversee the amnesty.

Meeting prison officials, he instructed them to carry out the amnesty correctly, democratically, publicly, and quickly.
