The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has delivered a detailed proposal for building a tramway from Ha Noi’s international airport to Ha Dong with an underground section through the old quarter in the center of town.
The proposal is now before the Ha Noi People’s Committee.
From Noi Bai Airport, the suggested route goes through the new residential area of Van Tri, across the Red River, through another new residential area called Ciputra, then to Thong Nhat Park and Ha Dong.
The above-ground sections of track would extend for 26.3 kilometers, and the underground section for 15.2 kilometers. The projected cost is US$2 billion.
JICA and the People’s Committee of Ha Noi are planning to build four light railway lines through the city, and there are more on the drawing board not involving the Japanese agency.
In fact, the People’s Committee and the Ministry of Transport of Viet Nam have already submitted eight proposals for building light rail lines to the central government for consideration.
Mr. Do Hoang An, vice chairman of the Ha Noi People’s Committee, pointed out that if JICA’s latest suggestion won the city’s approval, it would then have to go to the Ministry of Transport of Viet Nam.
