Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Kien Giang Province hosted a meeting about measures to bring home 61 fishermen detained in Indonesia on April 21.

Four fishing boats with 61 fishermen aboard were detained by Indonesian marine police vessel KP Bisma-8001 on January 4 for fishing in Natuna Sea without licenses. This violates the country’s seafood fishing regulations.

The four fishing boats belonged to Truong Van Ngu and Tran Van Hon, chairman and deputy chairman of Rach Gia City Fisheries Association.

The four vessels were operating under a contract signed between Ngu and Hon and Indonesia’s Papua Fishery Development Company in one year.

They were licensed by the Vietnam’s Directorate of Fisheries on August 30 last year to operate in Indonesian waters. This complies with a seafood exploitation cooperation agreement signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
