Massive fish deaths in Central coastal areas

Islands in the central province of Khanh Hoa were filled with the floating bodies of dead fish for past week.

Fish raised in farms in Hon Thi island and Nha Phu lagoon in Ninh Hoa Town died continuously. By statistics of the Ninh Hoa’s Department of Economy, fish deaths are butter fish and cobia fish weighing from 3-5 kilogram, the market size, which farmers can harvest to sell.

Around 130 tons of fish in 43 farms in the town died bringing estimated loss of VND6 billion. Farmers in coastal ward Cam Phuc Nam in Cam Ranh Town also experienced financial loss when their farms were filled with the floating bodies of dead fish.

Deputy head of the Fishery Department in Khanh Hoa Province Vo Khac En said that butter fish and cobia fish raised in Hon Thi islands and Nha Phu lagoon and Cam Ranh Bay could die of bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus. Additionally, fish could be poisoned jelly fish because through testing, it showed that the mucilage level in sea water in farms is thick.
