MoT proposes $50 million for Cai Mep – Thi Vai port upgrade
The Ministry has proposed the amount for dredging the 29.68km-long passage and quay side passage to a depth of 15.5 meters and 600 meters respectively to allow access to 160,000 DWT (14,000 TEUs ) vessels.
After dredging and improving navigational passages to make it easier for vessels of 200,000 DWT to transport to and from Cai Mep-Thi Vai, it is expected to become an international terminal.
According to the Ministry, more than 8,000 TEU ships have to transfer goods to other smaller ones before entering the passage which made this place an unattractive transit point.
