New Regulations to Reduce Government's Splurging on Cars

The Ministry of Finance plans to issue regulations concerning the use of cars for work purposes in state offices under which no new cars will be bought from 2007.

The ministry intends to abolish the existing regulation allowing administrative agencies to purchase cars on the basis of the number of regular employees on its roll.

Provincial officials will be excluded from the priority of using cars on their mission; instead, they are encouraged use rented cars or their own vehicles.

As for deputy ministers, they are allowed to use cars regularly while in office.

The ministry expects the new regulations will help save at least VND1.3 trillion (US$81.25 million) a year, and reduce the rampant use of public cars for personal purposes.
