No Need for WTO talks between Viet Nam and Russia

Viet Nam expects Russia to become a WTO member in the near future.

With Russia likely to join the World Trade Organization soon, there is no need for Viet Nam and Russia to hold bilateral negotiations on the latter’s WTO accession, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said yesterday.

Mr. Dung said at a regular press briefing that Viet Nam expects Russia to become a WTO member in the near future and therefore does not require official negotiations on the matter between the two sides.

Their trade ministries met in Ha Noi from April 1-3 to discuss tariff and non-tariff barriers that were impeding Russian exports to Viet Nam.

The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Trade and Economic Development Mr. Maxim Medvedkov and the Vietnamese side by Deputy Trade Minister Mr. Luong Van Tu.

Mr. Dung said the meeting was fruitful. The two sides will get together again soon to address some minor issues, he added.
