North-South expressway breaks ground after long time waiting

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the North-South Expressway yesterday, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized the strategic importance of the national expressway which connect cities, provinces to major economic regions, contributing to the country’s growth and people’s living condition.

The Ministry of Transport and People’s Committee in the central provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien- Hue organized groundbreaking of Cam Lo- La Son section of the North-South Expressway through
PM Phuc performed the much-awaited groundbreaking of the expressway ordering constructors to speed up the construction so that the expressway would be soon operated to help reducing transportation fee and improving people’s life.
This is the first sub-project of the 11 sub-projects of the eastern section of the North-South Expressway to start.
The North-South Expressway covers at least 2,000 kilometer, extending from the northern mountainous Lang Son Province to the Southern Province of Ca Mau. Nearly 1,000 kilometer section of the expressway was built while it is scheduled additional 900 kilometer will be built in 2021. Moreover, construction of at least more 2,000 kilometer section of the expressway will be completed from 2021 to 2025.
The National Assembly has approved the expressway project and 11 sections of the expressway have been funded by the state budget. Of 11 sections, the Cam Lo- La Son section through Quang Tri and Thua Thien – Hue provinces with the length of 100 kilometer with total investment of VND7,669 billion ($330 million).
In the first phase, it will have two lanes with the width of 12 meter allowing maximum speeds of 80km per hour. It is slated to finish by 2021.
Once completed, the Cam Lo- La Son section and the La Son - Tuy Loan section create the Cam Lo-La Son-Tuy Loan route which will join with the Da Nang – Quang Ngai expressway helping to reduce load for the National Highway 1 and Hai Van Pass accordingly contributing to boost socio-economic development for the central region
The PM said the building of four key national highways, including the National Highway 1A, the Ho Chi Minh Road, the North-South Expressway and a highway along the coast of Vietnam will be finished to create a complete traffic systems and reduce the distance between provinces.
He ordered party secretaries and chairpersons of provinces which the expressway goes through must be responsible for site clearing.
The Prime Minister gifted families of social welfare policies as a part of the ceremony.
