For the last two weeks, many people in the central region of Da Nang have begun panic buying of salt from supermarkets and grocery stores, causing a salt scarcity in some places.
Many people from the neighboring province of Quang Nam also rode the bus to purchase salt in large volumes from markets in the city. Some bought quantities from 10 to 100 kilograms.
According to one resident people stockpile salt as they are afraid that the seawater is contaminated with radiation from Japan.
A magnitude 9.0 earthquake followed by a devastating tsunami on March 11 damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant on Japan’s northeastern coast. Overheated nuclear fuel rods and steam from the crippled plant have vented radiation into the environment and sea.
