Party & State leaders meet EC President

The European Commission President (EC) José Manuel Durão Barroso arrived in Ha Noi to start his official visit to Vietnam on August 25 according to invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung had a meeting with President José Manuel Durão Barroso after the solemn welcome ceremony.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and EC President reported achievements of economy, society and foreign policies of each sides, and exchanged measures in order to strengthen further cooperation relations between Vietnam and European Union (EU) in the fields of economy, politics, security, science and technology, education, justice and migration.

In addition, two sides also discussed issues of East Sea and high level Europe- Asia forum.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung appreciated EC President’s visit in the context of two sides implement negotiations for a framework agreement on comprehensive partnership and cooperation (PCA) and EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and preparing for the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides (1990 and 2015).

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung thanked the European Commission and EU member countries for supporting the process of economic, social development, international integration, and maintenance assistance for Vietnam after 2014.

In addition, both sides proposed a number of measures to strengthen trade cooperation relations between Vietnam and EU in the future.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praised great contributions of EU in developing ASEAN Community, joining in cooperation between Mekong and Donau within the framework of Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM).

President José Manuel Durão Barroso appreciated also Vietnam’s great achievements in economic, social sector in the recent years, and expressed his belief that Vietnam will continue to promote economic innovation; and affirm an attractive investment market for foreign enterprises.

Moreover, EC President also hoped that ASEAN and EU will promote further trade cooperation.

Both sides agreed to create best conditions for Vietnam and Europe Union investors each other, try to end negotiation for EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) before October, and further strengthen cooperation in the fields of education and training, science and technology, resources and environment, agriculture and rural development, culture and tourism, information and communication, transportation and building.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and EC President José Manuel Durão Barroso stressed that peace, stability, security and maritime safety in East Sea region need to be maintained.

President José Manuel Durão Barroso affirmed again Europe Union always support solutions through dialogue on the basis of international laws, United Nation Charter and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, and call for no use of force on East Sea.

On the same day, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang had a meeting with EC President José Manuel Chairman Durao Barroso.
