Pleiku Airport expansion must finish before rainy season: Minister

Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang led a delegation to inspect the upgrades and expansion of Pleiku Airport in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai on March 11.

The project has been started since September 28, 2014 and is expected to be completed on December 31, 2015.

The first phase was finished, accounting three months earlier than planned. The airport will be temporarily closed between March 15 and October 25 for the implementation of the second phase.

The Minister asked the investors and contractors to hasten the progress of the project, take the advantage of the good weather before the long wet season comes.

The Vietnam national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) is temporarily delaying flights to Pleiku Airport.
Passengers who have bought tickets from and to Pleiku Airport will be refunded for free or switched to flights to airports in Buon Ma Thuot and Quy Nhon cities.

The carrier will also add more 10 flights to/from Quy Nhon City per week to meet the travel demand, including 7 flights on  HCM City- Quy Nhon route and 3 flights on Hanoi-Quy Nhon.

On the day, the Ministry of Transport has also announced the planning project of Ca Mau Airport from now until 2020, with vision towards 2030.

Ca Mau airport covering on an area of 244 hectares will receive 150,000 passengers per year by 2020 and 500,000 travelers by 2030.
