PM approves plan to improve northern transport capacity

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved an adjusted transport development plan in the northern key economic zone by 2020 with visions until 2030 to improve local transport capacity.

By 2020, the region’s transport volume will be improved to hit 500-550 million tons of goods and 1,180-1,200 million passengers a year with growth rate averaging 10-11 percent a year.

Of the total, cargo volume transported via seaports will hit 115-160 million tons a year.

Public transport will reach 20-25 percent in Hanoi and 5-10 percent in Hai Phong and other urban areas.

Railway will be gradually connected with seaports, economic zones, mines and large tourist hubs.

Transport organization will be rationalized in six main corridors including North-South, Hanoi-Hai Phong, Hanoi-Quang Ninh, Hanoi-Lao Cai, Hanoi-Lang Son, Ninh Binh-Hai Phong-Quang Ninh.

Authorized agencies will study building of a 1,435mm gauge dual track line and prepare for construction of the stretch from Hanoi to Vinh city at first.
