Prime Minister orders reduction on medicine prices

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung ordered agencies to tighten management for reducing medicine prices on March 21.

This order was made during a cabinet meeting about the draft of the pharmaceutical law.

The Ministry of Health does not have a finance department making it difficult to manage prices, said Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien. She proposes that the Ministry of Finance takes control of this issue.

Minister of Finance Dinh Tien Dung believes that the Ministry of Health should assume most responsibility for maintaining medicine prices.

Pharmaceuticals comprise of various components which the Ministry of Finance do not have knowledge of, said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam. He believes there needs to be cooperation between agencies.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh and Nguyen Xuan Phuc also agreed with Minister Tien’s establishment of a medicine price management council.

The Ministry of Finance should be responsible for the price management, said Prime Minister Dung. He believes the Ministry of Health should give estimation.

It is necessary to form a national council for price management, said Prime Minister Dung. Relevant ministries should meet to discuss this matter in the modified law how to ensure the people’s right.
