HA NOI (VNS)— A total of 184 prisoners inmates in Ha Noi have been shown clemency to mark Viet Nam's National Day (September 2).
One hundred and forty seven received a reduction of their terms and 37 were released early.
The prisoners underwent a transparent approval process, said Colonel Nguyen Cong Dung, prison warder at Detention Centre No. 2, where 42 prisoners were granted shorter sentences and six were released.
He said the clemency not only reflected the Government's leniency policy, but also encouraged prisoners to reform themselves so that they could return to society sooner.
In the central province of Phu Yen 253 prisoners were shown clemency, another 532 in the southern province of Tay Ninh and 13 others in the northern province of Lai Chau.
