The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has petitioned the PM to raise import tax on dairy produce to resolve difficulties for dairy farmers. This comes at a time when rumors about a ten percent, or more, price increase in imported milk products have spread.

Bewildered and concerned about milk supplements for their children, some parents are panic buying in certain parts of the city.

The shop keeper of Gold Mart at D1 Street in Ward 25, Binh Thanh district, revealed there will be a ten percent increase in prices of imported dairy products, like Mead Johnson, Abbott and Dumex, from February 22.

She said that the information was an announcement from the marketing division of large distributors. For instance, Ensure Gold, with a net weight of 900 gram, will soar from VND395,000 ($22.50) to VND424,500 ($24.25).

The supermarket CityMart also said that it received an oral announcement from 3A Company, which distributes Abbott branded milk products, of ten percent prices increase from February 22.

No one from 3A was available to comment on the rumors.

AD Company, which distributes dairy products for Mead Johnson, said the rumors were wrong, adding that the company will issue an official announcement and price lists to supermarkets and agents.

The company has refused to say if its prices will rise in the near future.

Meanwhile, domestic dairy producers said they had no plans to increase prices.
