Quang Nam official refutes panic purchase of salt

Nguyen Van Cong, head of the Quang Nam Province market management department refuted the charge that people in the central province of Quang Nam have rushed to buy salt from fear of radiation contamination of seawater in Japan.

Mr. Cong made the announcement to VNA to refute press statements that people in Quang Nam and Da Nang City had begun panic buying of salt from supermarkets and groceries.

He said that at present, the provincial salt market was stable and there was sufficient unrefined salt in stocks to meet the demand.

Everyday, market management officials in localities checked the market and reported the local market status to the department, he said.

Mr. Cong waved off the news report of people flocking to grocery shops and supermarkets to buy salt as a mere irresponsible rumor.

The Department of Industry and Trade has instructed market management officials in rural areas to prevent shops from hoarding commodities for selling at a higher price later.
