Retirement Age for Women Reconsidered

NA Committee has discussed the gender equality bill and the standardization bill in the 38th session. Regarding female workers’ retirement age, delegates showed their determination to eliminate gender discrimination.

The Viet Nam Women's Union put forward their proposal to the committee which includes three options. Firstly, the retirement age should be the same for both men and women; however, women can receive full pension if they opt for retirement five years earlier. Secondly, this same retirement age regulation is just for men and women officials working in the public services. Finally, the retirement age for women working in some professions is regulated by the government.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu

Chairwoman of the National Assembly's Committee for Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu said women’s health and life span improved as there are major socio-economic changes and better living standards.

It is therefore high time to remove the disparity in retirement ages between men and women. However, some NA members said when it comes to this issue, it is necessary to review the whole law system because the Labor Law regulates the retirement age is 60 for men and 55 for women.

Many agree on the third option that retirement age for women working in some professions is regulated by the government. In reality it is impossible to bring in indiscriminate regulations.
