Rising flood water causes risk for thousands of rice hectares in Mekong Delta

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang Nguyen Van Tam yesterday fretted quick rising floodwater plus dam discharge will destroy 40,000 hectares of summer-fall paddy fields in the province.

At present, the paddy fields border crossings Giang Thanh are at risk when floodwater rose quickly and dams Tra Su and Thanh La are going to discharge water, he said.
Long Xuyen Quadrilateral will be inundated whereas farmers will harvest 40,000 hectares of summer-fall crop, accordingly, if floodwater washed the area, farmers will lose.
Moreover, flood waters are threatening embankments in Giang Thanh district. Farmers have harvested 1,000 hectares while 3,000 hectare rice fields are at risk. Therefore, 200 soldiers from Vinh Dieu were sent to help farmers harvest rice.
The local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development liaised with related agencies to reinforce levees and pumps as well as call for inhabitants to keep track flood situation to protect 40,000 hectares of rice.
