Seawater enters deep into Mekong Delta

The annual penetration of seawater through the estuaries has begun in the Mekong Delta, according to the Southern Hydro-Meteorology Center.

Phan Thai Son, deputy director of the Ben Tre weather bureau, said the salinity has been gradually increasing deep in the mainland in the last few days.

In Loc Thuan commune, 20 km from the Cua Dai estuary, the rate is 2 parts in thousand, in Phu Khanh commune, 20 km from Ham Luong estuary, it is 2.5 parts in thousand; and in Ben Trai commune, 11 km from Co Chien estuary, and it is a high 13.8 part in thousand.

In Ben Tre Province, 50 km into the main estuaries, the salinity rate is 4 parts in thousand, Mr Son said.
In Tien Giang Province, seawater has entered through the Cua Tieu River to reach My Tho town, 50 km inland, he added.
