The shark (Rhincodon typus), weighing more that two tons and measuring 5.5 metres was caught by 63-year-old Nguyen Van Hau while he was fishing off Da Bac Beach in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau.

He found the shark stuck in his net while on his daily fishing routine. He informed the local authorities and later with the help of other fishermen hauled it ashore. The whale unfortunately did not survive and was found dead ten minutes later.

The whale shark was buried on instructions by local authorities.
